Red Apples, Chillies May Fight Breast Cancer
 (Singapore, Health-APP, 8/27/03)

Associate Professor Huynh The Hung of the National Cancer Centre in Singapore, and team, implanted mice with human prostrate and breast tumors and then fed some of them phytochemicals from red-skinned fruits and vegetables, such as apples, grapes and chillies. The animals ingesting the plant chemicals experienced a quarter of the tumor growth rate compared to the control group and their tumors shrank over time; whereas the untreated mice died within a few months. Scientists believe that the phytochemicals block proteins that the tumors need to create vessels to sustain their blood supply. These findings offer the hope of effective cancer treatments that, unlike current therapies, would have virtually no side effect.
