Prostate
Cancer Tests Overdone in Elderly
(HealthDayNews,12/2/03)
When researchers reviewed the records of 7,889 male
subjects in the 2000 National Health Interview Survey, the
investigators found that elderly men commonly receive prostate
specific antigen (PSA) tests, even though such routine
screenings have shown little benefit for men over 75. These
findings suggest that physicians may be wasting medical
resources and needlessly exposing patients to anxiety or harm
by recommending tests that offer no demonstrable benefit for
the type of patient involved |
