More Evidence That Folate Cuts Alzheimer's Risk
 (NY, Reuters Health, 3/1/02)

Dr. Mark P Mattson of the National Institute on Aging Gerontology Research Center in Baltimore, Maryland and colleagues fed mice that had been bred to have a predisposition to develop Alzheimer's-like brain deposits, a diet low in folates. The homocysteine levels of these mice rose 10-fold and this caused a significant loss of neurons, suggesting that a folate deficiency and a high homocysteine level may increase the risk for development of Alzheimer's disease.
