More Evidence
That Folate Cuts Alzheimer's Risk
(NY, Reuters Health, 3/1/02)
Dr. Mark P Mattson of the National Institute on Aging
Gerontology Research Center in Baltimore, Maryland and
colleagues fed mice that had been bred to have a
predisposition to develop Alzheimer's-like brain deposits, a
diet low in folates. The homocysteine levels of these mice
rose 10-fold and this caused a significant loss of neurons,
suggesting that a folate deficiency and a high homocysteine
level may increase the risk for development of Alzheimer's
disease. |
