Johnson & Johnson Halts Trials of Procrit
(NY, Reuters Health,11/26/03)

Ortho Biotech, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has suspended clinical trials of Procrit, a drug that stimulates the body to manufacture more oxygen-carrying red blood cells. The company had hoped to introduce the drug as an adjunct to cancer treatments, like radiation or chemotherapy; but found that elevating hemoglobin beyond certain levels resulted in unacceptable levels of blood-clotting. Company spokespeople say that the drug is safe when used at the lower levels appropriate for treating anemia.
