Homocysteine
Hikes Stroke Risk
(HealthScoutNews, 2/20/03)
In a study that appears in the February 21 issue of the
journal, Stroke, Israeli researchers report that heart disease
patients who have very high homocysteine levels have four
times the risk of suffering a stroke than those with the
lowest blood levels of this amino acid. Scientists speculate
that homocysteine damages the walls of arteries, thereby
creating fatty deposits and blood clots that can lead to
strokes |
