High Cholesterol May Weaken Bones
(NY, Reuters Health,11/3/03)

Dr. Andrea Poli and colleagues at the University of Milan assessed bone density and low density lipoprotein (“bad cholesterol”) levels in 1,303 post-menopausal women. The researchers divided the subjects into 3 groups based on LDL readings of normal, moderately high or high. The scientists found that women whose cholesterol readings fell within the “high” range were 74% likelier to have osteopenia, a thinning of the bones, than those with normal readings.
