Green Tea Compound Blocks Bladder Tumors in Rats
 (NY, Reuters Health, 8/13/03)

Dr. J. Karl Kemberling, and colleagues from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, implanted tumor cells into the bladders of rats and then a half-hour later injected some of the animals with epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a substance found in green tea leaves. All 12 untreated rats developed tumors within 3 weeks; whereas 18 of the 28 rats in the EGCG group did not. While past studies of the effect of green tea on cancer have produced mixed results, the current experiment suggests that EGCG may inhibit bladder cancer.
