Fish May
Fight Pregnancy Depression Risks
(San Francisco, Health-AP, 5/21/03)
Dr. Joseph R. Hibbein, chief psychiatrist at the outpatient
clinic at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism in Bethesda, MD reports that data collected on
11,721 British women indicates that women who consumed fatty
fish in the last trimester of their pregnancy are less likely
to experience depression for up to 8 months following
delivery. Scientists believe that the Omega-3 fatty acids in
the fish may raise serotonin levels in the brain, thereby
inducing a more positive mental state. |
