Fear of New
Things May Shorten Life
(NY, Reuters Health, 12/8/03)
Dr. Sonia Cavigelli of the University of
Chicago's Institute for Mind and Biology and team report that
rats that are fearful as infants tend to continue to exhibit
fearfulness as a personality trait throughout their lives.
Exposing these fearful rats to something new triggers a surge
in stress-related glucocorticoid hormones. In addition, these
rats tend to have a 20% shorter lifespan than their more
adventurous peers, leading scientists to speculate that the
elevated hormone levels may accelerate aging.
