Driving a Bus or Taxi Ups Heart Attack Risk
 (NY, Reuters Health, 7/7/03)

Dr. Carolina Bigert, of Karolinska Hospital in Sweden and team studied data from more than 1,000 men who had suffered a first fatal or non-fatal heart attack in 1992 or 1993. One hundred and forty-seven of these men had driven a bus, taxi or truck professionally for at least a year. The researchers also studied 1500 healthy men, including 129 professional drivers. The study findings indicate that bus and taxi drivers have a higher risk of heart attack than their peers. While the investigators did not isolate particular causes, they speculate that factors related to the work environment - like exhaust fumes, inactivity and stress - may be responsible for the increased risk.
