Cholesterol as Well as Drug: Study
(NY, Reuters Health, 7/21/03)
In a 4- week study, Canadian researchers assigned a group
of 16 subjects to a strict vegetarian diet consisting of
vegetables, fruits, almonds, vegetable oils, and fibrous
foods, like oats, barley and psyllium. The scientists gave a
second group of subjects 20 mg of lovastatin daily and a third
group a low fat diet. Both the lovastatin and vegetarian
groups lowered their LDL cholesterol by about a third; whereas
the low-fat group showed a cholesterol reduction of only 8%.
These findings suggest that patients may be able to
successfully manage their cholesterol through diet, rather
than taking
drugs, which may have adverse side effects.
