Cod Liver Oil Reduces Diabetes Risk
 (NY, Reuters Health, 12/16/03)

Dr. Lars C. Stene, of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, in Oslo and associates compared 545 type 1 diabetics to 1668 control subjects. The researchers used questionnaires to gather information on the intake of cod liver oil, vitamin D and other relevant factors. The resultant data showed that subjects who had consumed cod liver oil during the first 12 months of infancy had a 26% lower risk of developing type 1 diabetes, while vitamin D supplementation alone had no such benefit. The scientists speculate that the anti-inflammatory effect of the EPA and DHA fatty acids in the oil may be responsible for the protective effect.
