Cereal Fiber
May Lower Heart Risks in Elderly
(NY, Reuters Health, 4/1/03)
Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian of the University of Washington and
Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle,
and colleagues, followed 3,588 people aged 65 and older. The
researchers tracked the subjects, none of whom had been
diagnosed with cardiovascular disease at the start of the
study, for an average of 9 years. The scientists gathered data
on the participants' fiber intake and the incidence of
cardiovascular disease among them and found that the people
who ate high-fiber cereals and dark breads were less likely to
develop cardiovascular disease than their peers. |
