Broccoli
Helps Against Ulcers, Cancer
(Washington, MSNBC News, 5/28/2003)
Jed W. Fahey of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and
colleagues have found that, in lab experiments on mice,
sulforophane, a chemical in broccoli, kills Helicobacter
pylori, a bacteria associated with both ulcers and stomach
cancer. The investigators say that it is significant that this
plant-based chemical can kill the bacteria whether it is
outside or inside a cell; whereas conventional antibiotics
typically cannot reach this type of bacteria when it "hides"
within the cells that line the stomach. |
