Beefing Up Your Bones
(HealthScoutNews, 3/6/03)

A study at the University of Florida included 20 healthy women over the age of 60. Ten of the women did both aerobic and strength training exercises for 60 to 90 minutes 3 times a week; the others did not exercise. Both groups retained their usual diet and all were assigned to take 1,000 mg of calcium citrate malate and 400 IU of Vitamin D daily. After 32 weeks, the investigators found that bone density increased by an average of 11% for those in the exercise group, but decreased by an average of 5% for the non-exercisers.
