Inhalers May Raise Cataract Risk
(NY, Reuters Health, 9/18/03)
Dr. Liam Smeeth, from the London School of Hygiene and
Tropical Medicine in London, and associates, analyzed data
from 30,958 people, half of whom had cataracts. The
researchers found a significant association between the
exposure to inhaled steroids, such as those used to treat
asthma patients, and the development of cataracts: the higher
the dose and the longer the treatment period, the greater the
risk. |
