Aspirin
Resistance Tied to Heart Attack, Stroke
(NY, Reuters Health, 3/18/03)
According to Dr. Eric J. Topol of the Cleveland Clinic
Foundation, a small percentage of the millions of people who
take a daily dose of aspirin to prevent heart attack and
stroke, are resistant to its anti-clotting effect and,
therefore, remain at risk. Topol and his associates used a
special test to determine which of 326 patients were aspirin
resistant. All of these patients had stabilized cardiovascular
disease, for which they were being treated with 325 mg of
aspirin daily. The study found that those who were aspirin
resistant were 3 times more likely than their peers to suffer
a heart attack, stroke or death. |
