Arthritis on
Verge of Becoming an Epidemic
(HealthScoutNews, 5/10/03)
Dr. John Kippel, Medical Director of the Arthritis
Foundation, reports that, due to increases in the average life
span, arthritis is becoming more prevalent among the US
population. The umbrella term, "arthritis" includes over 100
conditions in which bone-buffering cartilage deteriorates, the
most common form being osteoarthritis which is marked by a
wearing away of cartilage over time. Remedies range from anti-
inflammatory drugs (which have side effects) to promising
dietary supplements, like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate
(which may actually rebuild cartilage). Preventive measures
include controlling weight and staying fit. |
