ALA Significantly Improves Symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy
(Yahoo News, 4/16/03)

American researchers collaborated with a Russian medical team to test the effect of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on diabetic neuropathy, the neurological deterioration that causes pain and numbness in diabetic patients. Doctors Peter Dyck, Phillip Low and William Litchy of the Mayo Clinic studied 120 diabetics at the Russian Medical Academy for Advanced Studies in Moscow. The researchers randomly divided the patients into 2 groups and gave one group 14 intravenous doses of ALA over a 3 week period; while the others received a placebo. The investigators found that ALA significantly improved the function of nerves that had been damaged by hyperglycemia. The doctors attribute the improvement to ALA's antioxidant effect, which allows it to mop up the free radicals created by chronic unregulated blood sugar.
