Wiping Out
Ulcer Bug May Help Glaucoma Patients
(New York, Reuters Health, 6/11/02)
Dr Jannis Kountouras of Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki in Macedonia and fellow researchers have found a
link between Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium typically
associated with stomach ulcers, and glaucoma. The scientists
detected H. pylori bacteria in 36 of 41 glaucoma patients. At
the end of 2 years, they found improved glaucoma pressure and
increased field of vision only in the patients whose H. pylori
bacteria had been eradicated. |
