Supplement May Slow Parkinson's
(Chicago, Health - AP, 10/14/02)

In a 16-month study of 80 Parkinson's patients funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Dr. Clifford Shults of the University of California in San Diego and colleagues, gave half the participants maple-nut wafers containing either 300, 600 or 1200 mg of Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ10). They gave the rest a placebo. The patients on the highest doses had 44% less decline in thinking, moving and performing routine tasks than the placebo group. Researchers speculate that the CoQ10 may boost mitochondria function and, thereby, prevent the nerve cell death which characterizes Parkinson's.
