Stool Test
Detects Hard-to-Find Colon Tumors
(NY, Reuters Health, 2/1/02)
Dr. Bert Vogelstein of the Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD
and Dr. Bernard Levin of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson
Cancer Center in Houston reported that the detection of
mutated BAT26 genes in stool through DNA tests could help
identify cancers of the right colon. Earlier the same week,
this research team had reported that a DNA test for abnormal
APC genes in stool helped in detecting other types of cancer.
Such findings mean that eventually cancer screening may
include testing a single stool sample for multiple genetic
markers. |
