Stomach Acid
Reflux May Up Risk of "Glue Ear"
(NY, Reuters Health, 2/8/02)
Andrea Tasker of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and
colleagues found significant concentrations of pepsin, a
proteinase of the stomach, in the fluid of the ears of
children with "otitis media with effusion," also called "glue
ear." They concluded that acid reflux may create inflammation,
setting the stage for bacterial growth and thereby
contributing to glue ear in infants and young children. |
