Stomach Acid Reflux May Up Risk of "Glue Ear"

Andrea Tasker of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and colleagues found significant concentrations of pepsin, a proteinase of the stomach, in the fluid of the ears of children with "otitis media with effusion," also called "glue ear." They concluded that acid reflux may create inflammation, setting the stage for bacterial growth and thereby contributing to glue ear in infants and young children.
