Gugulipid, an extract from the resin of the Indian guggul tree, reduces cholesterol by allowing the body to eliminate it. According to Dr. David D. Moore of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, the extract blocks the chemical that stops the body from getting rid of cholesterol, unlike popular statin drugs that stop the body from creating cholesterol. Gugulipid may prove to be a viable alternative to statins; however, the two do not work well together because guggulsterone, the active component of the extract, decreases statins' effectiveness.
