Secret of
Cholesterol-Lowering Tree Sap Revealed
(New York, Reuters Health, 5/2/02)
Gugulipid, an extract from the resin of the Indian guggul
tree, reduces cholesterol by allowing the body to eliminate
it. According to Dr. David D. Moore of Baylor College of
Medicine in Houston, the extract blocks the chemical that
stops the body from getting rid of cholesterol, unlike popular
statin drugs that stop the body from creating cholesterol.
Gugulipid may prove to be a viable alternative to statins;
however, the two do not work well together because
guggulsterone, the active component of the extract, decreases
statins' effectiveness.
