Quitting
Smoking Lowers Cataract Risk Slightly
(NY, Reuters Health, 1/7/02)
Smoking increases the probability that a person will
develop cataracts because it promotes oxidative stress which
creates free radicals in the lens of the eye. Now Dr. June
M.Weintraub and colleagues at Harvard School of Public Health
in Boston have found that quitting smoking may reduce the risk
somewhat, but not to as low a level as that for people who
have never smoked. |
