Compounds in Diet Help Lower Cholesterol
(New York, Reuters Health, 6/4/02)
Dr. Richard E. Ostlund of Washington University in St.
Louis and colleagues report that phytosterols, natural plant
substances found in vegetable oils, may reduce cholesterol
absorption. They fed 25 people high-cholesterol pudding, some
containing regular corn oil and the rest containing corn oil
from which the phytosterols had been removed. Subjects
ingesting the phytosterol-free corn oil absorbed 38% more
cholesterol than those receiving the intact oil.
