Plant
Compounds May Curb Pancreatic Cancer Growth
(New York, Reuters Health, 4/16/02)
Dr. Michelle Mouria and colleagues from the Veterans
Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and the
University of California, Los Angeles, found that plant-based
polyphenols, caused the cells of malignant tumors to
self-destruct through a process known as apoptosis. In
experiments, the phenols, quercetin (found in apples) and
genistein (found in soy products), caused apoptosis and
increased the survival time of mice. Trans-resveratrol (found
in red wine) caused apoptosis in laboratory-grown cells. |
