Physical Activity May Slow Atherosclerosis
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/1/03)

Dr. James H. Dwyer, from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and associates, used ultrasound to monitor plaque buildup in the carotid arteries of 500 healthy subjects over a period of 3 years. When the researchers analyzed the resultant data, they concluded that leisure time physical activity inhibits atherosclerosis, the accumulation of plaque in the arteries. The findings confirm that plaque builds up more slowly in people who engage in vigorous activity; while it proceeds at the fastest rate for those who are sedentary.
