Moderate Beer
Drinking May Be Heart Healthy
(NY, Reuters Health, 11/26/02)
In a study of 19 middle-aged adults, Dr. HFJ Hendriks from
TNO Nutrition and Food Research in Zeist, the Netherlands, and
team, had the women drink 3 glasses of beer with dinner, and
the men 4. For 3 weeks, the participants drank regular beer;
then after a week without alcohol, the participants switched
to non-alcoholic beer. The researchers found 35% lower levels
of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) after 3 weeks of drinking regular
beer as compare with the 3 weeks of drinking alcohol-free
beer. Since CRP may signal inflammatory processes that cause
artherosclerosis, Dr. Hendriks believes that beer consumed in
moderation may have an anti-inflammatory effect that may
decrease a person's risk of developing heart disease. |
