Miso Soup,
Soy Compound Lowers Breast Cancer Risk
(NY, Reuters Health, 6/17/03)
Dr. Seiichiro Yamamoto of the National Cancer Center
Research Institute in Tokyo, and colleagues, questioned 21,000
Japanese women about the soy and soy-containing foods in their
diets. The researchers then tracked these women for 10 years,
during which time 179 of the subjects developed breast cancer.
When the scientists analyzed the data, they found that women
who ate the most miso soup and foods rich in isoflavones were
less likely to develop breast cancer than their peers who
consumed smaller amounts of isoflavones. They also noted that
the total amount of soy a woman ate in general was not as
significant in determining her breast cancer risk as the
amount of miso soup and isoflavones that she consumed. |
