Magnesium May
Improve African Americans' Health
(San Diego, Reuters Health, 10/21/02)
After reviewing more than 100 studies on magnesium
deficiency, Dr. Chester Fox of the University of Buffalo
concluded that deficiency of this mineral is more common among
African Americans than among other ethnic groups. Since low
levels of magnesium have been associated with insulin
resistance, high blood pressure and diabetes -- all of which
are prevalent in the African American community-- Dr. Fox
recommends that African Americans consider the DASH (Dietary
Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet which is high in
magnesium, calcium and potassium and low in sodium. |
