Low Potassium Intake Linked to Stroke, Study
(New York, Reuters Health, 8/12/02)

The results of a study of 5,600 older adults, conducted by Dr. Deborah M. Green of the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii and colleagues, indicate that consuming potassium-rich foods (bananas, tomatoes, oranges etc.) may reduce the risk of stroke. The researcher found that the stroke rate for participants with low potassium intake was higher than for their peers and even greater for those with low blood levels of potassium who were taking diuretics.
