Dr. Gail K. Smith and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, paired 48 Labrador Retrievers and gave one dog in each pair unlimited quantities of food and the other 25% less than its partner ate. On average, the calorie-restricted dog lived 2 years longer and did not develop chronic diseases, like osteoarthritis, until much later.
