Linoleic Acid
Intake May Cut Stroke Risk
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/1/02)
Dr. Hiroyasu Iso of the University of Tsukuba in Japan and
colleagues tested the blood of 7,450 adults over age 40 for
linoleic acid and asked them questions about their diets. The
team then tracked these people for a period of from 6 to 14
years and found that participants who had greater blood levels
of linoleic acid had a smaller risk of ischemic stroke, which
results from narrowed arteries. The results of this study
suggest that a diet rich in linoleic acid may protect against
ischemic strokes, possibly by preventing the blood from
clumping
