L.A. Area May
Ban Dry Clean Solvent
(Diamond Bar, CA, Health AP, 9/17/02)
Regulators in Southern California want to phase out the use
of the common dry-cleaning solvent, perchloroethylene (perc),
because it contaminates the environment and is probably
carcinogenic. Although they face opposition from the chemical
industry, as well as small dry cleaning businesses, the
officials at the South Coast Air Quality Management District
are convinced that they must push forward because evidence
shows that in the Los Angeles area, diesel exhaust is the only
air pollutant that causes more cancer than perc. |
