Iron Deficiency May Contribute to Alzheimer's Damage
 (NY, Reuters-Health, 11/4/02)

Lab experiments conducted by Dr. Bruce Ames of the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute in California and team, show that interfering with the production of heme, a form of iron critical to cell functioning, causes cells to degenerate and to produce abnormal proteins: this phenomenon parallels the death of brain cells and formation of deposits in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. While this research is very preliminary, the researchers suggest taking a multivitamin with iron as an "insurance pill."
