Infected Gums Leak Toxins into Bloodstream
(NY, Reuters Health, 2/7/02)

Dr. Eric H. Rompen of the University of Liege, Belgium and colleagues found that people with severe gum disease had higher levels of endotoxins in their bloodstreams after chewing gum than those with healthier mouths. Endotoxins, the poisons emitted by some bacteria, may create chronic inflammatory conditions in the blood vessels that can lead to heart disease.
