High Fat Diet
Cuts Epileptic Seizures in Children
(London, Reuters Health, 3/10/03)
Dr. Helen Cross and colleagues at the Great Ormond Street
Hospital in London, found that 14 severely epileptic children
had significantly fewer seizures while on a high-fat,
low-carbohydrate diet for 3 months. The high-fat diet puts the
metabolism into ketosis, causing the body to use fat, instead
of sugar, as its main energy source. Cross and her associates
plan to compare 2 different forms of the diet in a study of
120 children, in which 60 are given cream, butter and oil;
while the other half obtain some of their fat intake through
supplementation. |
