Handful of Nuts Every Week May Ward Off Diabetes
 (NY, Reuters Health, 11/26/02)

Study results reported in the Nov. 27th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicate that women who eat an average of 5 ounces of nuts weekly are 27% less likely to develop diabetes than those who rarely eat nuts. Dr. Rui Jiang of the Harvard School of Public Health and colleagues, arrived at this conclusion by analyzing the responses of about 84,000 initially healthy female nurses who submitted questionnaires over a period of 16 years. Since nuts are high in calories, the researchers recommend that instead of simply adding them to the diet, women use them to replace other, less nutritious foods.
