Genes, Diet
May Conspire to Boost Alzheimer's Risk
(New York, Reuters Health, 8/14/02)
Dr. Joseph A. Luchsinger and colleagues studied 980 older
adults who were free of dementia. When the researchers
analyzed the data gathered for the 4-year study, they found
that 242 participants had developed Alzheimer's Disease and
that people with the Apo e-4 gene, which is associated with
Alzheimer's, were more likely to develop the condition if they
consumed diets high in calories and fat. The results suggest
that people with the Apo e-4 gene may lower their risk of
developing the disease by eating low-calorie, low-fat diets
