Garlic May
Prevent Cancer
(Washington, Health - AP, 11/05/02)
Ann W. Hsing, an epidemiologist, and colleagues at the
National Cancer Institute, studied adult male residents of
China, where men have the lowest rate of prostate cancer in
the world. During interviews with 471 healthy men and 238 who
had prostate cancer, the researchers ascertained how often the
men ate each of 122 different foods. The scientists found that
those who ate a daily amount of more than a third of an ounce
of foods from the allium group-- including garlic, onions and
scallions-- were 50% less likely to have prostate cancer. |
