Fish Oil Plus Statins Improve Cholesterol
(New York, Reuters Health, 9/2/02)

Dr. Gerald A. Watts of the University of Western Australia and his team studied 48 obese, insulin- resistant men who had high levels of LDL ("bad") cholesterol and low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. They divided the men into 4 groups: the first group took atorvastatin and fish oil tablets daily; while the second took atorvastatin and a placebo; the third took fish oils and a placebo; and the fourth group took 2 placebos. The researchers found that after 6 weeks, the cholesterol profiles of the subjects taking the statin drug and/or fish oils had improved. They concluded that a combination therapy using both statin and fish oil was especially effective because it approached the problem in 2 different ways.
