(New York, Reuters, 5/7/02)
Patients with Type 2 diabetes become desensitized to
insulin and their ineffective insulin cannot move glucose from
the blood to the cells where it must be stored for energy. The
resultant buildup of sugar in the blood can damage bodily
organs. Now Dr. Mark Pereira of Harvard University and
colleagues have found that eating a diet high in whole grains
can improve insulin sensitivity. Dr. Pereira suggests
replacing processed grain foods, like white rice and refined
bread, with whole grains, like brown rice and oats. |
