DNA from
Gene-Modified Crops Found in Human Gut
(London, Reuters Health, 7/17/02)
Scientists at the University of Newcastle, working for
Britain's Food Standards Agency, have shown that DNA from
genetically engineered food can pass into human intestinal
bacteria. The researchers gave each of 7 patients who had had
their lower bowels removed, a burger and milkshake containing
genetically modified soy and then examined samples of the
participants' gut bacteria. They found a modified soy gene in
3 of the 7 samples; however, when the researchers fed the same
meal to 12 people with intact digestive tracts, there was no
sign of GM material in the subjects' feces. |
