Crohn's
Treatment Restores Gut Barrier
(New York, Reuters Health, 9/24/02)
Crohn's Disease is a chronic inflammation of the bowel in
which the gut lining becomes more porous, allowing harmful
substances to pass into the bloodstream. Dr. Peter Suenaert of
the Catholic University Leuven in Belgium and team used an
infusion of Infliximab to inhibit the Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)
in 23 Crohn's patients and found that blocking this single
protein (TNF) reduced inflammation and substantially restored
the gut lining. |
