Calcium Plus
Protein Equals Strong Bones
(New York, Reuters Health, 4/29/02)
In a 3-year study of 342 elderly people who were taking
calcium citrate malate and Vitamin D supplements, Dr. Bess
Dawson-Hughes and Susan S. Harris of Tufts University, Boston,
reported greater bone mineral density improvement for those
eating more dietary protein. The improvement occurred only for
men and women taking the supplements, not the placebo, which
suggests a synergistic relationship between the calcium and
protein. |
