New York, Health Reuter's, 9 /23/02)

Breitner of the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, WA, and colleagues studied several thousand elderly Utah residents for 5 years, the researchers found that participants who had taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), like aspirin, for at least 2 years prior to the study, had less than half the risk of developing Alzheimer's. The researchers speculate that the NSAIDS may have a protective effective only if they have been started at least 2 years prior to the onset of Alzheimer symptoms.
