Iron Levels
are Linked to Stroke Damage
(University Hospital, Garona, Spain, 2000)
When researchers compared people who stabilized or improved
after having a stroke with those who continued to suffer
progressive decline, they found that the patient's iron level
corresponded with the degree of damage. People with very high
iron levels suffered the most brain damage after a stroke,
apparently caused by the release of free radicals when the
iron oxidized. The study concluded that there should be future
investigation of therapeutic agents that inhibit iron’s toxic
effects.
