Effect of gamma-tocotrienol on blood pressure, lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant status in spontaneously hypertensive rats
 (Clinical & Experimental Hypertension, 11/21/1999)

Researchers at the International Islamic University, Malaysia, divided spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) into 4 groups, leaving the control group untreated, while giving each of the other 3 groups a different dose of gamma tocotrienol, a form of vitamin E. A fifth group of rats in the study had normal blood pressure. The investigators monitored the blood pressure of all the animals for 3 months, after which they performed tests on their bodies and determined that the treated groups had improved antioxidant status, including SOD activity. The scientists concluded that gamma-tocotrienol may prevent high blood pressure, as well as lower harmful lipid peroxides in plasma and blood vessels.
